Once in while I  get an e-mail from a Betcke who typed "Betcke" into Google and  asks me if we are related. Mostly my answer is: "could be".  This page is an attempt to give a little bit more info to those people. The data is very incomplete: Traditional genealogy involves visiting archives, shifting through papers, looking at microfilms, travelling to lot's of different town-halls and breathing in dusty air. Nice if you have a lot of time and are not allergic for dust. Since this does not apply to me I mostly wait for others to do the dirty work for me and publish it on the internet. Here you can find my first harvest. If you know more than me, please let me know: stamboom AT betcke DOT net.

Update dec 2007:  Recently I changed my research policy ;-) and visited the Amsterdam city archive at their magnificent new location, here I found Information about the first two Betckes in the Netherlands (see next section).

Origins of Betcke in the Neterlands

Around 1800 two Betckes emigrated from Germany to the Netherlands. I am a direct descendant from Johan Wilhelm Michael Betcke, born in 1780 in Lenzen (a png image with his ancestors and  descendants can be found here).  But there was also an Adolph Heinrich Betcke, born in 1805 in Fürstenberg (a png image of his tree of descendants can be found here).  It is unkown to me if they were related.

The name Betcke and variations such as Bethke and Baetcke,  originate from  the German regions Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. According to a website which is no longer online, it means "small Bertram", where Bertram is a surname.

My family tree as far as I know it

Here you can find an overview of all the persons I gathered in my genealogical database. I use the German program  Ahnenblatt to sort my genealogical data. I like the functionality of the program, but it only speaks German. Since the data itself is in Dutch the website generated by Ahnenblatt is now a strange mixture of Dutch and German.  If you have a problem understanding the website, please let me now at stamboom AT betcke DOT net.

By the way: Genealogy by the family-name is stupid

A Englisch survey once showed that 10% of the people have a different biological father than they think they have. This means that you have a 90% chance that the man who gave you his name is really your father, that you have 81% chance that the guy who gave him his name is really your grandfather. If you extrapolate this you find out that after seven generations you have less than 50% chance that the guy who's name you are carrying is really a biological ancestor. So only following the female line, like Jewisch people do to determine who is Jewisch,  is much smarter.
However, science more and more agrees that both nature and nurture are responsible for who you turn out to be. So there is still some kind of connection with the man who's name you are carrying. Besides, one name just looks nicer.
